Tube Monsters

Each year around Halloween, we throw a party for Penelope and her friends that we call Cupcakes and Costumes. We try to keep this party simple with just a couple of games, a craft, cupcakes, and light snacks. Every year we have a blast! In the past, we’ve kept the crafts pretty simple, along the lines of decorating a goodie bag. But this year, the kids were a little older, so I decided to get a little more ambitious with our craft project and let the kids put together tube monsters.
A few simple supplies are needed for this project:
- tubes of various sizes (I saved toilet paper and paper towel tubes for a couple of months to be sure we had plenty)
- paint (I prepainted the tubes using Crayola washable paint for our party because of drying time and I didn’t want a bunch of toddlers getting paint all over their Halloween costumes)
- yarn
- pipe cleaners (I cut mine into 3 different sizes so the kids had options without having to cut their own)
- eyes
- paper scraps
- markers and/or crayons
- glue dots
- glue sticks
- scissors (I had out safety scissors for the kids and a pair of grown-up scissors tucked away for cutting the yarn)
- tape (I offered painters tape and scotch tape)
All the kids had to do was select a tube and then decorate it. The glue dots were ideal for the toddlers because they can stick what they want to put on their tube to the glue dot, then peel it away from the paper and place it exactly where they want it. I picked up this little cheat from a community craft table at a park and as long as Penelope is little, I’ll never go back. It gives her the perfect amount of control and me the perfect amount of glue mess (none).
In terms of my prep, it was the perfect craft for a busy parent. Penelope loves to paint, so we pulled out tubes a few times over the course of our collection period and painted some together. Other than that, the only prep was cutting the pipe cleaners! Short and sweet for a working mom!
The tube monsters were awesome, but I’ll let you see them for yourself!
