There are few lives busier than that of a parent. And a working parent? Even busier. Add in that I serve 12 different school sites for work on days I’m not working from home as part of a virtual team and that creates a ton of balls in the air. So, when I was contacted about using the Inkberry Planner for 2019 to see how it worked for me, I jumped at the chance. Because, while I use an electronic calendar attached to my email system for work appointments, I really needed something that let me add in personal calendar items and also gave me a kind of “big picture” visually when I start looking at fitting in things like doctor’s appointments, lunches with friends, and travel.
I think my favorite feature of the Inkberry Planner after using it for just a few days is the habit tracker. I couldn’t find a lot online about how to use the habit tracker, so I set it up in a way that works for me this month. I’ll see how that goes. The great thing about the format is that it is super flexible, so if I don’t like how I’m using it in month, or I want to change the habit I’m working on, I can! This month, I’m working on tracking exercise, deleting junk emails (because my inboxes get out of hand super fast), and laundry. For exercise, my goal is to run 4 days and do strength workouts 2 days while taking rest days on Fridays. I’m coding my workout types with an R or S so I know what I did. I typically follow the same routine each week but when either my husband or I travel during the week, I sometimes have to change things out. Deleting emails may seem like a silly thing, but I have a bad habit of just glancing at my inboxes to see if anything seems important and then moving on to something else. That means that little number in the red circle goes up fast! So, I’m deleting a chunk of emails each day. Generally in the neighborhood of 50-100 per account because right now things are completely out of hand. And finally, I’ve got laundry on my habit tracker. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have heaps of dirty laundry in every corner of my house or anything, but I really don’t like having to spend a whole day over a weekend doing laundry. So, if I can get in the habit of one or two loads a day (washed, dried, and folded counts, but put away is even better) then I shouldn’t have to spend my whole weekend on that!
The planner also includes monthly and weekly planning pages. The monthly works great because I can see what I really want to see, the big picture! I also like that there is some space for goals and notes, but I haven’t started using that section yet. The weekly pages are fine for my purposes right now, but I can see how on a day of meetings, I might not have enough space under the day for the number of items I have on my calendar. I also wish there was a space on the weekly page for tasks. I often have a running list of tasks to be accomplished during the week, so it would be nice to have that on the page. For now, I’m keeping them on sticky notes (two small pads included).
Other great features of this planner include an elastic band for holding a pen in place, two place marker ribbons attached to the spine, note-taking pages, reference notes on the liner pages, and a pocket in the back of the planner for stashing odds and ends that need to stay with the planner. I have found that pocket perfect for stashing work receipts when I travel! It can also be used to store the pads of sticky notes that come with the planner. Finally, I love that this planner is unassuming in style. It is a simple black book. Since I don’t go in for the florals, bright patterns, and the like, the appearance is perfect for me.

Katie is an educator mama with a strong sense of adventure. Lately, she is striking a balance between getting back in shape while chasing after a toddler, a demanding full-time job, eating, drinking, and adventuring around her local area and beyond. At Living the Katie Way, she tells stories and describes how she still has fun, eats great food, and stays in shape while parenting the little girl who has become the light of her life.
I like the layout of this planner. Right now I just use my Google calendar but it’d be really helpful to have that habit tracker!
