Sugar ‘N Spice VoxBox Recap: Eat It Up
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.
Two of the products in my first VoxBox were of the edible variety: belVita Breakfast Biscuits and Nectresse sweetener.
First up for me were the belVita Breakfast Biscuits. Looking at the pack, I knew they wouldn’t be enough to sustain me as a real breakfast, and at 230 calories for the pack, they were too high calorie to eat all of them as a snack. So, I split them over two days and had them as my morning snack with a banana. Tastewise, they weren’t bad. They reminded me of something like Teddy Grahams. They weren’t super sweet and you could definitely taste the cinnamon. I also liked the texture of the biscuits. The primary ingredient on the label is “whole grain blend” which they define as a combination of oats and rye flakes. So, there was definitely some real texture as I chewed the biscuit. While I kind of enjoyed these, they aren’t something I would go for on a regular basis. They contain a lot ingredients and don’t meet my criteria for “real food.” In addition, they didn’t have enough substance to hold me over until lunch time. In another hour, I was hungry again. But, if I was in a pinch and needed something I might grab them from a vending machine (should they be available) as they would be healthier than many of the other options that you typically find. If you need breakfast or snacks you can grab and go with, they might not be a bad option. They just aren’t right for me.
The other product I got to try from this box was Nectresse sweetener which is made by Splenda. I have to preface this review by saying, I don’t like sweeteners. I drink my coffee black and my tea either black or with just a little milk. I don’t put sugar on my grapefruit and I don’t really like soda (when I do, I go for the real stuff, not diet). So, trying this was a reach for me. My department at work had our monthly meeting last Friday morning and one of our divisions always provides breakfast, with coffee. I thought that would be the perfect time to try it and to get some reactions from other folks who would typically reach for Splenda or another low/no calorie sweetener. I ended up chickening out myself and opting to taste the sweetener alone rather than in my Starbucks. So, I opened a packet and dipped my finger in. I gave it a few tastes. The sweet taste isn’t overpowering, even on it’s own, even though it is definitely sweeter than regular white sugar. The thing I didn’t like about it was the way the sweet just hung around in my mouth after I was finished tasting. It took several swigs of my coffee to get rid of it. The people who were in my meeting who tried it liked it a good bit. One made a point of telling me that she definitely thought it was better than regular Splenda. She also liked that it was made from a fruit extract (monk fruit).
So, there you go. No big winners on the food front, but I’m glad I had a chance to try both products.
