Dain’s Place

Last Saturday night, Nathan and I had tickets to see Guster at the Carolina Theatre in Durham. Since our eating guidelines are more relaxed during the weekend, we already knew burgers were going to be on our dining agenda. So, I spent Saturday afternoon perusing Yelp and online menus trying to decide what our best option was going to be.
We were toying around with going to Bull City Brewery and Burgers because we were interested to try some of their beer. But, the food hadn’t gotten the best reviews, so I decided to do a little more research before we settled on a place for sure. After all, when you only eat a burger every once in a while, you want it to be the best possible burger! I started looking at a few “best burger” lists and found that apart from some more “fast food” type places, Dain’s Place kept coming up again and again. I checked out the menu, the beer list, and distance from the venue. All seemed to fit our needs perfectly, so I took the idea to Nathan, and we ran with it.
The menu for Dain’s Place is very simple: hot dog, burger, or chicken. Then, you build your own. They have two named burgers, The Dainer and The Defibrillator. The Defibrillator has actually been featured on Man vs. Food. I don’t watch the show, but I’m guessing that was the menu item selected because it is a burger that has a hot dog (among other toppings) on it. They also have several different soups and a few sandwiches and appetizers. They also offer dessert, if you want Oreos and milk.
We wandered in about 6 PM on Saturday evening and found all of the tables in the small restaurant were full. Fortunately, there were a few empty seats at the bar, so we snagged two in front of the beer cooler (best seat in the house, right?). We were offered menus quickly and only spent a few minutes gazing into the cooler before we both settled on beers we hadn’t tried before. We deliberated a short time and placed our order.
The food came out pretty quickly. These are pretty high up there when it comes to messy burgers. I cut mine in half to try to make it more manageable, but I think I ended up with just as much mess as I would have had I left it whole. We nabbed a side plate to put ketchup for our tots and dug in. Overall, these were really good burgers. I don’t know that I would place them all the way at the top of my burgers list, but it might be in my top ten. The service was outstanding, as well! We will definitely go back to Dain’s Place when we’re looking for burgers in Durham!
